We spent the afternoon floating around my friend Amy's lake. Caroline was a trooper - I wasn't sure that she'd be up for floating around a lake with a bunch of grownups, but she had a BLAST. Caro fed saltines to some fish near the dock -and even caught a few in a small net. Then she went on a "safari" with John and her dad on a big 4-wheel vehicle to see some cows and peacocks, and then came back to swim around for a while.

She was quite vigilant about sunscreen application and hydration. Responsibility...check. She then even conversed with unfamiliar grown-ups - with many looks to mommy and daddy for approval. Right on. My girl is so cool. That gene clearly skips around the family.

For dinner we came home and grilled out - angry because we neglected to watch the fireworks after the eating competition. (Kobayashi ran up on stage... WHAT????)

Then we relaxed, and watched a PBS Version of "A Capitol Fourth" that made us realize how old we actually are. Hoping Caroline's joie de vivre and unbridled passion for life gets us off the couch in the future. She was too tired for real fireworks this year, but I KNOW she will plan better in the future.

Many thanks to Amy and John and Patsy and Dale for sharing their perfect lake day with us. And thanks to Caro for behaving at a 9.4/10 for the day. I am a lucky lady. Great friends, great husband, and an almost magical child who is just freaking amazing.
