Seemingly overnight, our sweet Caroline has turned into a sass-mouthed, shrieking loon. I heard that the "terrible 2's" were nothing compared to the "f-ing 4's", but...yeah. I didn't believe it until now. In spite of the irritating behavioral issues, we still converse with the girl regularly, so Caroline has developed a pretty large vocabulary that she uses to surprise me every day. Her comments are achingly cute, which evens out the crazy/obnoxious/sassy brat she likes to be 90% of the time. I can tell I'm going to deal awesomely* with the teen years.

In other news, we visited Dr. Kribbs last week for Caro's 4-yr appt. Our wee one is 39 inches tall and weighs 32 lbs, and is developmentally on target/ahead of schedule. She is also fascinated by dinosaurs, babies, dress-up, computer games, and setting up complicated imaginary play scenarios. These two sentences have nothing to do with one another, in an homage to Caroline's stream of consciousness ramblings.

*Awesome = atrocious here.

Told you so. And it's just beginning. There's a crescendo.

On a happy note, 5,6,7, and 8 are delightful. (9 is easing back into "attitude-y".)

When I taught lessons, I always thought 9 was delightful. Of course, I was only comparing that to 14, 15, and 16, since I didn't have any 8-year-olds. If only I'd had 5-8 year olds; I didn't know what I was missing!

Caroline is looking so TALL. I know you put her height, but I have no idea how tall that is without seeing her in person. But she LOOKS tall. She also weighs the same amount as AJ.

I'm a little (what's the word here? Disgruntled? Annoyed?) terrified that 4 is worse that 2. Seriously? It's going to get WORSE THAN THIS?

I read a great quote the other day: "Some days are too difficult to parent sober." Maybe days should be replaced with years.

Dear Melissa:

2 is nothing compared to the joy that is 4. HOWEVER, it only lasts like 6 months of age 4, not the whole four year.

And 9 isn't awful, but I'm beginning to occasionally see the emergence of "I'm just too cool to have a Mom", which I expect to reach its pinnacle somewhere among the 14-16 age range you specified. That's when I became a nightmare to my own parents, at least.

Esbee -

I completely remember how awful I was to my parents, starting about age 13. My biggest fear is having that revisited on me.

My mom said today it all goes downhill when they go to school and realize their parents aren't the boss of the whole world. Maybe it's all a downhill slide from the moment they slide out the birth canal. . .

Slide? Wow, you had it easy. I had to push and get some help from a vacuum extractor. :)

Caroline isn't BAD, as such, she's just, well, kind of jerky. Like a 13 year old, but smaller. And cuter. It's very bizarre. She laughed (LAUGHED!!!) at me today when I gave her a time out. I had to take a time out myself after that.

Still...it's not like she's smearing her own poop all over everything like AJ, Melissa, or like she's still trying to run in front of oncoming traffic. It's not so much a physical challenge as a mental one. So it's slightly more exhausting and yet less terrifying.

Well, Sebastian did come out in 3 pushes. AJ took 1.5 hours of pushing, but I guess that's not too bad. They didn't have to use the vacuum.

AJ no longer cares about time out, either, unless we're at the park and I restrain him in a baby swing. I told him the other day I was going to give him a spanking, and he said, "Need spankin', mama! Needsa spankin!"

That just goes to show that my child has never had a real spanking. he sure wouldn't want one if he had. . .

I could do without the poop smearing, though. That drains my will to live. I feel so. . . defeated most of the time. Maybe that's why he's doing it.
